Classmate News

June 7, 2007, from Joanne Sparks Perer

Patti,
Thank you for putting together this reunion. I'd like to make a public service announcement to my fellow women classmates. I had a heart attack in February. I had no pain or squeezing. Was admitted to the hospital for nausea. I couldn't stop. Women's heart attack symptoms are different from men's. The most common symptom is uncontrolled nausea. I'm fine now. I walk two miles on the lakefront every morning. I look forward to seeing you in June.

Joanne Sparks Perer-Mandeville, LA

June 4, 2007 - From Serita Wildt Stamford

Patti,
I am still living at my same address in Brazil and will not be able to join the Reunion. My best to all of you. Would love to receive a Memory Directory.

Serita Wildt Stamford

June 4, 2007 - From Janet Bottey Harris

Dear Patti,
Due to family travel plans to the southwest, I will not be joining our classmates for our 50th Class Reunion. I know it will be a wonderful event and I congratulate the entire Reunion Committee for all their hard work. Please extend a big Tennessee Hello to the old gang!

Thank you and may God bless all my classmates,
Janet Bottey Harris

June 4, 2007 - From Jenna Jones

Hello all Classmates
Unfortunately, I have several previously planned professional commitments this week so I'll miss you all again!

After receiving a Bachelor's from the University of Miami, a Master's from Case Western Reserve University, and a Ph.D. from Kent State, Miami Jackson is --- and always will be --- first and dearest in my heart. I'll always remember where friendships were found and dreams formed. Keep a song in your heart and let your mind dance.

To the future!
Jenna Jones
Cleveland, Ohio

June 1, 2007 - From Gail Whitehead

Hi you all,
This was taken at my desk . Sure wish I could make it to the re-union. It so good to see and hear about everyone. I'm going to try and find some pic's of my grandchild, Samantha Gale,( imagine that!!) she and my daughter live with me in a condo in Santa Clara, Ca. Paula is 42 and a wonderful mother. My son Ronny, likes to be called Ron, still lives in Ft. Lauderdale and is married. He unfortunately has no children, but have my Grand kittys,2 and grand dog Cocoa. So needless to say Samantha is the apple of my eye!!!! She will be 5 on August 4. Starting kindergarten in Sept.

I am single and work 5 days a week at Interior Plant Design, title being Executive assistant, In other words I do everything. We put decorative planting in office buildings and do all types of special events, I of course do all the front office work. We have about 30 employees, at Christmas we
pretty much double that. We have our own greenhouses, 16,000 and 5,000
square feet. I do get to go out at Christmas and help decorate and put things together that starts in September. So it's really a fun job for me!
I will send pictures in the mail , also.

Give my best to all and have a super time!!!!!!!!!!!!
Stay in touch. Love, Gale

May 24, 2007 - Pat Batal Lee

Dearest Patti,
Thank you so much for all you have done and are doing for "the last hug". I know that you and our committee have worked diligently to make this a memorable and happy weekend.

I, sorrowfully, will not be able to attend as my husband Jim is on oxygen 24 hours a day and cannot be w/out me. I know Claudette will be awesome and that you all will be lovely and laughing and even shedding a few tears. I will miss all of those events but most especially the hospitality room where we really spent many hours conversing, catching up and expressing our deep love and respect for each other!

We were so very lucky to be classmates at the greatest high school in Miami. My memories are so rich and bring me so much joy.

I wish all of you good health and happy retirements and continue to make your individual and collective marks on our world.

Thank you and love always,
Pat Batal Lee, Griffin, Georgia

May 22, 2007 - Bill Story's Bio

Classmates,
I wanted to share Bill Story's Bio since leaving Jackson. Unfortunately, he will not be able to attend . It is so interesting.

Patti,
Good to hear from you. I wish I could attend the reunion. I would really like to see my old friends. Such good memories!

I will give you a nutshell of what has transpired with me. After I graduated, I moved back to Oklahoma. I then moved to New Mexico and worked with the mentally retarded for 3 years while going to college. I met my wife, Nellie, in New Mexico and we have been married for 45 years. I graduated from New Mexico Highlands University with majors in psychology and sociology. I was a parole officer in New Mexico for 3 years and then worked with Job Corps for 3 years. The center where I worked closed down and I applied with the Federal Prison System. I was hired on at the Federal Correctional Institution in Lompoc, Ca. in 1969. I then went to Tallahassee, Fl., Sandstone, Mn., Lewisburg, Pa., Atlanta, GA., Boron, Ca., Ashland, KY.(I was warden at the Federal Correctional Institution in Ashland for 10 years), Leavenworth, KS., and finally the Administrative Maximum (better known as the Federal Supermax) in Florence, Co. I was the first warden at the Federal Supermax. It is the most secure prison in the world and houses the most dangerous inmates in the federal system. I had the Uni-bomber and the heads of every major prison gang in the United States. Mexican Mafia, LaNuestra Familia, Latin Kings, Crips, Bloods, Black Guerilla Family, Ayran Brotherhood. Woody Harrelson`s father was there and recently died of a heart attack. He had been convicted of assassinating a federal judge in San Antonio, TX. The blind sheik who was involved in the first bombing of the Twin Towers is there. Rudolf the abortion clinic bomber and Olympic bomber is there. I retired in January of 1996 and worked as an expert witness for various U.S. Attorney's offices on federal death penalty cases. I quit that about 5 years ago and really retired.

We have 2 boys and 2 granddaughters and 1 grandson. Our oldest son works with the Federal Prison System and was recently promoted to Associate Warden at a Federal Prison in Elkton, Ohio. Our youngest son is a veterinarian and owns a clinic here in Decatur. He and his wife are the reason we moved here in Sept. 03. I had some significant medical problems about 3 years ago. I had a AAA (Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm) that ruptured and eventually had to have my right leg amputated just below the knee. I am doing fine now and in fact played my second round of golf a couple of weeks ago.

Patti, I think that is enough . Please keep in touch.
Bill Story

May 18, 2007 - Ronnie Robinette

To my classmates I say hello. Long time no see. It’s nice to be back from the dead. I found my name on the “In Loving Memory” list. But I have been away a long time. After graduation I attended the Univ. of Miami School of Music for a year. Got tired of that and joined the Army to get into aviation. I spent  twenty five years in it and for twenty three of those I flew their airplanes and helicopters and loved almost every minute of it. Two years in Korea, two lovely years of exhilaration and occasional moments of shear terror in Vietnam, and seven years in Europe. Made one around the world flight and six solo flights across the Atlantic delivering military aircraft. After five thousand hours of that, I got tired of it too and retired to a quieter life. For the past twenty one years Minnie, my wife of  over forty years, and I sold silk flowers all around Texas (how’s that for a quieter life), and retired from that in December ’06. I’m sorry to say we won’t be attending the reunion. We will be in Vermont for our oldest granddaughters high school graduation, which, incidentally is almost exactly fifty years after my own. All of you please have a wonderful time.

 Ronnie Robinette

May 12, 2007 - Carl DeSantis

Carl was one of our Jackson Classmates and served as Chairman of the Board of Rexall SunDown Inc. DeSantis has been an entrepreneur all of this life and started working on a mail order vitamin and consumer healthy products business from his home. His development of Rexall made his company the world's leading companies in the development , manufacture and distribution of vitamins and nutritional supplements. He has know sold Rexall Company and is a well known philanthropist, as well as an investor and major shareholder in a number of small business including mail-order men's clothing, restaurants and art galleries. His current project is quite exciting and involves a major development project in South Africa. Carl is in South Africa now and not sure if will be back in the country in time to attend the Reunion. He maintains his office in Delray Beach, Florida.

May 8, 2007 - From Waneta Skipper Aston

Hi All,
Sorry I won't be able to attend this reunion but I have a granddaughter getting married this July in Florida. Since I now live in Ohio, I can't make two trips to Florida so close together. I am also still working part time. I hope this is really a good reunion. I still can't believe it has been 50 years!

April 29, 2007  - Phil Guerra

To All My Fellow Committee Members,

It is with much sadness that I tell you of the passing of one of our dearest and most beloved classmates and Reunion Committee member.

Phil had always been such a great support to me in organizing and coordinating all our  Reunions beginning with our 10th in Miami Springs.

The first time I met Phil was in our high school auditorium , backstage, painting back drops for our Senior  play.  He made me laugh then and continued to make me laugh over and over again until our last conversation just a few weeks ago.

Phil was always there for everyone in his life. A true friend, scholar and devoted husband and father.  Please let all of us pray for Fran , his children and all of us who will miss him so much.  He wanted so desperately to get well enough to attend to our 50th Reunion.

I will be in touch with each you within the next few weeks for a memorial to Phil.

We have lost two Phil's in our lives this past year- Phil Alexander and Phil Guerra. Both of them true "Jackson Generals".  We want to remember them always for their devotion to our Reunion Committee Group, their families and friends.

Blessings to all of us.
Patti

April 26, 2007  - From Mary Cohn Thacker

Patti,

I just went on the web-site and you all have done such a wonderful job.
My husband is an EMT and will not be able to stay with my daughter, so unless a miracle happens I will not be able to attend.

I retired as a 43 year banker, moved out of the Keys with my husband and daughter.  We moved to Winter Haven, bought a house from the proceeds of our house in the Keys and now do not have a mortgage to contend with.
We left the Keys two weeks before the last hurricane hit and wiped out of our home we sold.  We love it here.  I retired for 1 year and could not stand staying in my jammies, so found the job I have always wanted.  20 hours a week, no Fridays, teaching classes in banking in the bank that I now work for.
Can take off when I do not have a class and I am out of my jammies.  You learn that as a retiree you have to be doing something to keep you young.

I just have the one daughter, who oddly enough works for a large hospital in the rehab department handling all of their insurance.  When she goes back to work, probably in July, isn't she going to have good therapy helpers?

I lost a husband to cancer abut 24 years ago, remarried a wonderful man and we are very happy.

I am so sadden that I will not see you all but most of all my best friend in school, Janet Bottey.  I have lost contact with her over the years.

So to all of you I will keep all of you in my prayers for good health, and a happy time.

Love Mary Cohn Thacker

April 22, 2007 - From Glenn Pinder

Miami Jackson ’57 Grads,

The 50th reunion is fast approaching, and I am always reminded when thinking about the history of our high school, that many of us both started and ended in that same building, which is now a thing of the past.  The 1st and 2nd grade classes of 1946-48 were the last of the elementary level classes held in the old building, and more than a few of us were there!

We were dispersed for the 3rd grade to several locations, many to the new Allapattah Elementary, which was our school home until returning to Jackson in the 8th grade.  Maybe even more fantastic is the fact that several of this gang had been together at Miss Winifred’s Kindergarten held at the Allapattah Methodist Church in the same block as Jackson.  At one point, I had photographs of the kindergarten graduation and of my 1st and 2nd grade classes.  I’m not sure it would do any good in identifying the “suspects” at this point.  But I hope any of you who will be at the reunion will in some way acknowledge that 12 or 13 years of our early history.  The collective memories of a bunch of 60-somethings about their experiences as 5- and 6-year-olds might be quite entertaining!

Looking forward to seeing all you ’57 grads

Glenn Pinder

April 21, 2007  Update on Fran & Phil Guerra

Hi All,
Fran Guerra called me this afternoon.
She is asking that people do not try to call either on the cell phone or their home phone.  Just too many calls.
Phil has made the decision to go to the hospital and have Hospice take care of him there.  At present, he is still able to communicate with Fran.  However, she sounded exhausted and was trying to get some rest for herself this afternoon.
She promised that she would call if the situation changed for the good or for the other alternative.

If you wish to send a note of encouragement to both of them, send to:

Mr. and Mrs. Phil Guerra
5203 SW 71 Place
Miami FL 33155

Thank you,

Patti

April 21, 2007- From Connie Tosto wife of Former Classmate Vincent T.Tosto

Connie and Vincent were residing in Miami. She had received all the reunion information and returned the following to share with Vincent's classmates.

"Franklin Temp Elsea - on Monday, December 18, 2006, loving father, friend and companion passed to heaven from natural causes. He was an Army veteran, a former minor league baseball player and owned a painting business for many years"

We thank Connie for sharing with us the loss of Vincent.
Both attended our 25th Reunion and had a daughter Chara-Lee.

April 21, 2007 - From Sauri Proenza Harris
(she will be attending our 50th Reunion)

Shortly after graduation, I married and had two beautiful daughters, Michelle and Minette. Was employed as the Hispanic Account Coordinator in Miami, Paul's Carpet, and Wholesale Flooring. Unfortunately, my marriage ended in divorce and remarried in 1969. We then moved to Blackshear, Georgia. I was again widowed in 1980 and remarried in 1982 and moved to Deland Florida where I now reside.

Michelle, is a middle school teacher and lives in Deland as well. Minette lives nearby in Orlando and is a corporate trainer/spokesperson/actress. I am now retired from the "Orlando Sentinel" after 18 1/2 years and widowed again in 2005.

I have two awesome grandsons, Joseph (13) and Jacob (9).
I look forward to our 50th Class Reunion and to re-establishing new relationships with my former schoolmates.

- Sauri Proenza Harris

April 11, 2007 - A Phone Call from Eddie Allison

Hi All,

I just wanted you to know that I received a phone call this afternoon from Eddie Allison.  As most of you know, Eddie was the 25th Class Reunion Chair and has always contributed to the success of each reunion thereafter.

He and his wife have made reservations to attend our Reunion in spite of many hardships on both of them. Both Eddie and his wife are in motorized wheel chairs and Eddie has oxygen to help with his emphysema.  He has conquered lung cancer and his wife has  advanced rheumatoid arthritis.
They had a fire in their home in February and hope to move back in sometime within the two weeks. Living in a hotel at present.

With all of the above, they called the Hyatt Hotel and the hotel was most helpful in placing them in a convenient handicapped room (with our group rate) and giving a special parking space for their van which they must use for the wheel chairs.

He was extremely emotional in his conversation of how he is looking forward to seeing everyone. It was a wonderful time in his life and he can't begin to express his feelings of what it is to come together again for this special meeting.

This time may never come again for some of us.

Can you imagine the effort he is making to join us.

It's absolutely true, none of us knows what tomorrow will bring. We are definitely in the Fall of our lives and a planned activity of this type may not be possible again.

We, as your committee,  hope that each of you will make an attempt to contact other classmates in becoming a part of our 50th "Last Hug" Reunion.

Thank you.

Committee Chairperson,

Patti Hoover Kearson, and Members of the Committee

March 3, 2007 - From Elizabeth Brady Ankeny
Dear Classmates,
I am recovering with a broken neck. Therefore, unable to make the reunion which is a great disappointment. My sincerest thanks to all who put together the reunion. My love and prayers to all the Class of 1957 - Jackson Generals. It was a great year.

Thanks,
Elizabeth Brady Ankeny  (see Photo section)

January 24, 2007 - Phillip Guerra

Hi the Committee Chairperson Patti Hoover Kearson received the following email from Phillip Guerra on January 24, 2007 and is sharing it with all members of the Jackson Class of 1957.

Patti: As you may be aware, my cancer has resurfaced with a vengeance. I've spent most of Dec and Jan in the hospital and scheduled to go home today for more physical therapy. Outlook does not look good. I think, therefore, that you should consider me for only minor tasks on committee work, as I'll be confined to a wheelchair and a hospital bed at home. I'm sure you understand and will pass on this info to all other committee members.

Love and hugs, Phil G.

The committee asks each member to please remember Phil in your prayers during this difficult time. Phil loves hearing from us so let's encourage him through cards, phone calls and emails, as we are able.

Committee Chairperson,

Patti Hoover Kearson, and Members of the Committee

From Elaine Robertson

I am so sorry I won't be able to attend the class reunion and I really appreciate you taking the time to acknowledge my registration.  All the information on the form will remain the same after I retire with the exception of my email address.  I work at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in the Medical Dean's Office and we are winding up the 2006-2007 year while gearing up for the 2007-2008 year.  It would create a hardship on my office if I tried to take off at the time of the reunion.  I know you said it is the "Last Hug" reunion but perhaps since we are all getting older we could have less formal gatherings in 5 year increments.  Anyway, when I am retired I will be most happy to participate in keeping databases on our classmates or helping to shoulder the correspondence load or anything that may be of assistance.  I wasn't one of the most active class participants during high school due to my own personal life but I do remember so many of the class members.

I was very sorry to hear about Phil Guerra's cancer and I only wish him well.  I will include  him in my prayers.

You mentioned widows or widowers and divorcees, I am a divorcee and when I divorced I did take back my maiden name.  My two boys are grown and they supported me in my decision.

All in all I would say life as been good to me.  Of course it is all a learning experience and nothing stays the same.  I live in the country about 35 miles from San Antonio and commute to work everyday.  I am so looking forward to retirement.  My sister and niece live just a stone's thrown away from me and we raise deer.  Just kidding, we don't raise deer.  They just tolerate us and to show them how much we appreciate them, we feed them - No hunting allowed on the property.

Anyway this is probably more than you really want to know.  So I will close with the request that I am included in any "over the hill" Jackson group meetings.

All the best,

Elaine Robertson
